Field Needs Identified in Workshop, Las Vegas, 6 May 2003

Urban Flood / Expedient Methods

  • Volume – Frequency relationships for arid areas
  • Vegetation impacts on Manning’s “n”, vegetation loss during floods
  • Demo levee inspection / levee database / GIS methods to identify potential failure areas
  • Precipitation better estimates from SAT, radar, etc
  • Basic geomorphic analysis guidance (for FDR)
  • Channel loss during routing (net lateral inflow)
  • Design guidance for constructing wetlands for FDR and pollutant mitigation
  • Guidance for use of FLO2D for overbank vegetation areas and alluvial fans

Channel Restoration

  • Nutrient reduction via sediment control
  • Resistance due to riparian vegetation.
  • Instream and streambank stabilization and habitat improvement measures.
  • Riparian restoration strategies and techniques.
  • Channel design (low-flow, multi-stage).
  • Floodplain design and channel/floodplain connectivity

Geomorphology and Sediment Processes

  • Alluvial Fan evolution and processes
  • Sand and gravel mining—impacts, management, and by-products
  • Modeling—simple from complex
  • Guidance and processes for range of flows experiences in arid regions
  • Loss of hydraulic connectivity between channel and floodplain
  • Debris flow forensics
